Folium Sensing is a deep-tech startup specializing in fiber optic–based distributed sensing technologies. We transform standard optical fibers into continuous, real-time sensors capable of monitoring strain, temperature, pressure, and acoustics across long distances with incredible precision.
Born inside the innovation-driven ecosystem of IIT Madras Research Park, we combine advanced photonics research with industrial-grade engineering to solve complex monitoring challenges across critical infrastructure, energy networks, transportation systems, defense environments, and environmental monitoring.

Our Story
Folium Sensing was founded to bridge the gap between cutting-edge photonics research and its real-world applications. Many industries today still rely on point sensors, manual inspections, or delayed measurements which often fail to capture early signs of deterioration.

About the Directors
Meet the visionary leaders behind Folium Sensing
Krishnan Balasubramanian
Prof. Krishnan Balasubramaniam has been involved in the field of Non-destructive evaluation for more than 33 years with applications in the fields of maintenance, quality assurance, manufacturing and design. He is Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Evangelising Lab to Market Transitions in India from the past 24 years. With his advisory and mentorship, we are all set to revolutionize the NDT market Globally.
Balaji Srinivasan
Prof. Balaji Srinivasan earned his Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of New Mexico, USA, and has since established himself as a leader in optical technologies. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras.
With extensive expertise in active and passive optical components for distributed fiber optic sensors and fiber lasers, Prof. Srinivasan has co-authored over 230 publications and holds 23 patents (with more pending). He has successfully led or is currently involved in over 40 research projects, resulting in the development of 8 technologies, 6 of which have been transferred to industry for commercialization.
Sanidhya Chaturvedi
Sanidhya Chaturvedi is the Co-Founder & COO of Folium Sensing Pvt Ltd. A student at the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, Sanidhya is specializing in Entrepreneurship and RF Photonics, blending cutting-edge technical knowledge with a strong entrepreneurial drive.
In his role at Folium Sensing, he is responsible for leading the company's strategic vision and operations, focusing on developing innovative sensing technologies for diverse applications, including acoustics, temperature, and strain monitoring in industries like infrastructure and border security.
Venkatesh Varadhan
Venkatesh Varadhan is the Co-Founder & CTO of Folium Sensing Pvt Ltd, bringing over 15 years of industry experience to the company. An alumnus of IIT Madras from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Venkatesh has established himself as a leader in the field of optical sensing technologies and advanced engineering solutions.
In his role at Folium Sensing, he is responsible for spearheading the company's technology development and product innovation, particularly in Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing.
